I'd like to add a set of reasonably priced speakers to my desk top computer. can someone suggest something under $100, under $200?

for that much money you could probably get a 5.1 surround sound system :) you need a sound card that can handle that though, since you live in America try Newegg.com there are other so try searching or if you just need two standard speakers try the creative or Logitech range they cost around $90

Logitech makes great computer speakers. Try the Logitech Z-2300. You'll be happy with the results.
